Monday Musings: Top 5 Questions for Game 6
Ohio State and Oregon are both undefeated leading up to their matchup on Saturday night in a game that has the potential to be one of the best games of the season. Here are our top 5 questions going into this game.
1. Will this be a Heisman moment game?
At this time, the Buckeyes do no have a player that is near the top of the Heisman conversation, which maybe fine up to this point because if you ask anyone on the team, their goal is for a National Championship. However with this being a marquee game, there is a chance this could be a Heisman game for Will Howard? Or even Emeka Egbuka or Jeremiah Smith? This will be a game against another Heisman hopeful in Dillon Gabriel who is looking to help lead his team to victory.
2. Can the Buckeyes start off clean?
Against Iowa, who is more of their own entity than a good comparison when looking at Oregon, the Buckeyes stopped themselves in the first half which made that game closer. Against better teams who have a more potent offense, they can turn those mistakes into points, which is something the Ducks have the talent to do. If the Buckeyes can limit turnovers and mistakes in the first half, they can keep themselves competitive.
3. Will the Buckeyes play 4-2-5?
The Ducks have versatility with their offense, but Dillon Gabriel is a mobile threat when he needs to be, and can create some problems for the defense to try and spy, as well as cover their receivers. We have seen the Buckeyes flex into a 4-3 defense the past few weeks and it has opened up a cushion against the pass which has kept them on the field, and not forcing as many 3 and outs. The 4-2-5, which is the base defense on the Knowles system, with Downs and Ransom, this gives the Buckeyes a bit more adaptability but limits its chances of a spy.
4. Can the Buckeyes gash the Oregon Defense in the run game?
The biggest challenger for the Ducks this season was Boise State, who had a top Heisman candidate in running back Ashton Jeanty, who ran for 192 yards and 3 touchdowns in a 34-37 loss to the Ducks. The tandem of Henderson and Judkins could be a matching threat that can create some opportunities for the Buckeyes, but the the Ducks have had 4 weeks now to fix some of those issues.
5. Who will Corso pick?
It was announced that ESPNs College Game Day will be heading to Oregon for the clash of these teams, and it will be interesting to see who Lee Corso will pick for his headgear. At this time, Ohio State is both the betting favorite and has as 60.5% chance to win according to the ESPN Matchup Predictor, which is almost flipped from what it was in the beginning of the season.
