Monday Musings: Top 5 Questions for Game 4 – Washington

As Ohio State wrapped up their first bye week of the season, the Buckeyes carry a 3-0 mark into one of the biggest road tests of the season. Washington waits in Seattle, and this matchup will go a long way toward defining OSU’s national outlook—not just their win-loss record. Here are a few musings as we look ahead:

1. Jeremiah Smith Is a Star, but Supporting Cast Matters

Smith continues to lead the Buckeye receiving corps in almost every metric. He’s racked up 20 receptions for 315 yards through three games this season. Carnell Tate is doing his part, too, with 12 catches for 219 yards and three touchdowns so far.

Smith’s ability to demand coverage frees up space. Tate benefits when the defense has to account for Smith deep. Against Washington, this dynamic could give OSU’s offense the kind of matchup leverage they need—if the Buckeyes can execute under pressure.

2. Running Game & Offensive Balance Look Promising

Through three games, the Buckeyes’ ground attack is picking up steam. Bo Jackson is leading the backfield in yards, and CJ Donaldson, James Peoples, and others are contributing. If OSU can maintain that balance—the deep threats from Smith/Tate combined with a run game that forces fronts to respect both—they’ll have a much better shot in a place where the crowd, altitude, and travel can complicate things.

3. Defensive Line Needs to Show Up in the Trenches

Matt Patricia’s defense has looked solid overall—holding teams relatively in check—but there were spots in recent games (especially early halves) where Washington’s offensive line and skill players could make things messy. OSU will need to be sharp early: contain the QB, set the edge, and avoid big chunk plays. Games on the road swing on third downs, turnovers, and who can disrupt the opponent’s rhythm.

4. Mental Toughness on the Road Will Be Tested

Ohio State hasn’t played a marquee road game since coming down from the top spot after Texas. Washington isn’t a PowerFive brand for nothing—they have history, a fan base, and a motivated group. Travel fatigue, crowd noise, and getting off-script will all matter. OSU’s composure in these moments will probably decide whether this is a potential signature win or just another expected one.

5. National Implications: Who’s Rising & Who’s Looking Over Their Shoulder

OSU is clearly on pace for a playoff seed if they keep winning. But behind them, the field is noisy. Penn State, Oregon, Miami, Indiana—all making noise. If OSU beats Washington convincingly, it cements their status; a close or sloppy win, though, gives critics something to point at. Loss? That opens the door wide for multiple scenarios where OSU doesn’t control its own fate.
