Buckeyes Control Terrapins from Start to Finish in Decisive Road Win

The Xfinity Center has long been a difficult venue for Ohio State, with the Buckeyes having dropped seven of eight games in the building, with their only win coming during the fanless 2020–21 season. This time, however, the script flipped. Ohio State seized control early, building a double-digit lead midway through the first half and answering every Maryland push to keep the Terrapins at bay before breaking the game open midway through the second half on the way to an 82–62 road victory. The win lifts the Buckeyes to 15–7 overall and 7–5 in conference play, while Maryland — now losers of eight of its last nine — falls to 8–14 and 1–10. An early 20–8 surge gave Ohio State the cushion it needed, and each time the Terps threatened, the Buckeyes had a response before eventually pulling away for good.

In a contest that featured a late skirmish resulting in the ejections of Ohio State’s Taison Chatman and Maryland’s Elijah Saunders, the Buckeyes were highly efficient offensively. Ohio State shot 57% from the field, including 8 of 17 from three, while holding Maryland to 47% shooting and 8 of 26 from deep. The Buckeyes assisted on 17 of their 28 made baskets and paired that offensive efficiency with an aggressive defensive effort that forced 16 Terrapin turnovers, converting them into 24 points. Christoph Tilly led Ohio State with 19 points on 7-of-10 shooting, with Bruce Thornton close behind at 17 points on 7-of-9 shooting. John Mobley added 15, and Chatman chipped in 10 off the bench. Saunders paced Maryland with 20 points, while Solomon Washington contributed 13 and Andre Mills finished with 11.

1st Half

Maryland struck first, collecting a pair of offensive rebounds on its opening possession that resulted in the game’s first points. Bruce Thornton put Ohio State on the board with a 10-foot jumper in the paint, and after the Terrapins responded with a basket of their own, Christoph Tilly attacked from the top of the key, spinning past his defender for a smooth layup at the rim. A blown defensive assignment led to a Maryland dunk, but the Buckeyes countered when Taison Chatman banked in a three from the top of the arc while absorbing contact that went uncalled. Just before the first media timeout, Devin Royal was fouled on a short baseline jumper, and at the break Ohio State held a 7–6 advantage.

Out of the timeout, Royal went to the line and split a pair of free throws, but Maryland answered with a floater to tie the game. Royal returned to the stripe on the next possession and knocked down both this time, and after a defensive stop, a two-man action between Ivan Njegovan and Thornton freed Thornton for a jumper that dropped. The Buckeyes stretched the lead further when Njegovan converted two free throws and Tilly added a score from the left block. The Terrapins finally halted the 8–0 Ohio State run with a banked-in runner, and at the under-12 media timeout the Buckeyes held a 16–10 advantage.

The Buckeyes added to the lead when John Mobley knocked down a three from the left point, and after Maryland banked in a jumper on the other end, Tilly attacked the lane and finished with an emphatic dunk. Moments later, Mobley forced a turnover and pushed it ahead to Tilly in transition, where he capped the break with a smooth finger roll, prompting a Maryland timeout as Ohio State stretched the lead to 23–12.

Maryland came out of the timeout and knocked down a corner three, but Ohio State quickly answered when Mobley buried a three of his own from the right corner off a baseline inbounds set. The Terrapins split a pair at the line on the next trip, and then Tilly delivered a sharp feed to a back-cutting Thornton for an uncontested layup. At the under-8 media timeout, the Buckeyes held a 28–16 lead.

Maryland chipped away at the deficit with a pair of free throws followed by a powerful dunk, but Ohio State stemmed the tide when Colin White secured an offensive rebound and finished off the glass. The Terrapins answered with the next five points to keep the pressure on, before Tilly silenced the home crowd by knocking down a three from the right point to halt a 10–2 Maryland run. Moments later, Chatman forced a turnover, and in transition Mobley found Amare Bynum for a dunk. At the under-4 media timeout, the Buckeyes led 35–26.

After a Maryland basket trimmed the deficit, Chatman responded by drilling a three from the left corner to push the Buckeye lead back to double digits. Following a Terrapin turnover, Thornton connected on a runner in the lane. Maryland earned a trip to the line and converted both free throws, but Thornton answered with a pair of his own to close the first-half scoring, sending Ohio State into the locker room with a 42–30 advantage.

Ohio State shot an efficient 53.6% from the field over the opening 20 minutes, knocking down 5 of 9 from beyond the arc. Maryland shot an even 50% overall but struggled from deep, hitting just 2 of 11. The Buckeyes left some points at the line, converting 7 of 11, while the Terrapins went 6 of 7. Of Ohio State’s 15 made field goals in the half, 11 were assisted, and the Buckeyes forced 9 turnovers while committing only 3 themselves, leading to a 13–0 edge in points off turnovers. Rebounding was level at 13 apiece, though Ohio State secured 7 offensive boards that turned into 13 second-chance points.

Christoph Tilly paced all scorers in the first half with 11 points on 5-of-8 shooting, with Bruce Thornton adding 10. Maryland was led by Solomon Washington’s 9 points.

2nd Half

Ohio State opened the second-half scoring with a Thornton jumper in the mid-paint, but Maryland responded with the next five points before the Buckeyes got back on track with a 12-footer from Royal. Tilly then knocked down a pair at the line, and Thornton followed with a runner to extend the lead. After the Terrapins halted the 6–0 Ohio State spurt with a free throw, Thornton slipped a slick post feed to Tilly for two. Maryland answered with a three, but Mobley matched it on the other end. Another Terp triple followed, only to be countered by a Tilly steal that he converted into a transition score. Maryland added a basket, and Royal responded with a short fadeaway. The Terrapins then used a pair of offensive rebounds to generate another bucket, and at the under-12 media timeout Ohio State held a 59–46 lead.

Ohio State stretched the margin when Thornton split a pair at the line, and moments later Tilly came up with a steal that led to Bynum finishing off the glass in transition. Chatman then converted an old-fashioned three-point play, and Mobley followed by drilling a three that forced Maryland to burn a timeout with 8:45 remaining and the Buckeyes in front 68–46.

Maryland answered with a 9–2 run to halt the Ohio State surge, with the Buckeyes’ lone field goal in that stretch coming when Royal set up Njegovan for an emphatic dunk. After Jake Diebler used a timeout to settle his team, Tilly drew a foul and knocked down both free throws. Thornton added a runner, Maryland countered with a bucket, but Mobley splashed another triple. At the final media timeout with 2:19 to play, Ohio State held a commanding 77–57 lead.

After a Maryland dunk, Chatman split two free throws, but that’s when the fireworks happened. Maryland had been playing bully ball all night, and in a scrum under the Terrapin bucket, Chatman and a Terp got in a skirmish where both players threw punches and were ejected from the basketball game. The common foul on Maryland put Ohio State at the line where Bynum split the pair. Gabe Cupps added two free throws with just over 1 minute to play. After Maryland hit a three, Cupps got hacked in the backcourt and split two free throws which completed the scoring in the Buckeye win.

Game Wrap

It wasn’t always pretty, as Maryland mucked it up for much of the game, but Ohio State weathered every Terrapin run and proved to be the better team for all 40 minutes in a much-needed road victory. This was a game the Buckeyes had to have, and they wasted no time taking control, never really letting Maryland in the mix.

Every Big Ten road game is a challenge, and Ohio State came ready to play, bringing the intensity required to win away from home. The bench showed further improvement, with Taison Chatman emerging as a key contributor, adding the depth this team has been searching for.

A major positive from this game was Christoph Tilly’s performance. After struggling with a lower-leg injury and a tough outing in Madison, he looked healthier than he has in some time, moving fluidly on both ends and showing increased activity, particularly on defense. Four players finishing with at least three assists highlighted just how connected this team is offensively, and the defense on this night was notably sharper.

Maryland played extremely physical, and in the past, that could rattle Ohio State. Not this time—they stayed composed, matched the toughness, and executed in a road environment. While this win might not drastically shift the big-picture standings, it was one the Buckeyes could not afford to lose.

Now, they turn their attention to a stretch of games that present opportunities for signature wins, beginning Sunday against that team up north. With a strong performance and a lively crowd, an upset here could cement their spot on the right side of the tournament bubble. Tonight, they can enjoy the victory; tomorrow, it’s back to work.
