Ohio State Fires Chris Holtmann

According to multiple reports, Ohio State decided today was the day. After a second straight disappointing season, and losers of 16 straight on the road, the University has made the decision to part ways with Head Coach Chris Holtmann after 6 plus seasons at the helm of the program. Back to back top 10 recruiting classes were not enough to get the program to the heights it demands and unfortunately came to the decision to make the move today after another tough road loss last night in Madison. On pace to finish near the basement of the Big Ten for a second straight season, the program will likely turn the reins over to Assistant Coach Jake Diebler for the remainder of the season and will begin a national search immediately. In his nearly 7 seasons as a head coach, Coach Holtmann finishes his tenure with a 137-86 mark, including a mediocre 67-65 in Big Ten games. He led the team to 4 NCAA appearances (with 2020 eliminated due to COVID cancellation), yet never reached the second weekend of the tournament. His highest conference finishes in his 7 years was 2nd in year 1, and a 4th place finish in 21-22. In 2021, they reached the Big Ten Tournament final, falling to Illinois in overtime and last year, as a 13 seed in the conference tournament, they became the first school to play on Wednesday to reach the semifinals, ultimately falling to eventual champion Purdue. All in all, it was an up and down 7 seasons and while most season’s started promising, the eventual collapse in Big Ten play in January year after year were too much to overcome. Coach Holtmann represented the school with class and brought in quality kids to put on the uniform, so this decision couldn’t have been easy. We wish Coach very well in his future endeavors and thank him for his years as a Buckeye.
