The Columbus Blue Jackets defeat the Detroit Red Wings 5-3 in their first ever Stadium Series

In a historic event at Ohio Stadium on March 1, 2025, the Columbus Blue Jackets triumphed over the Detroit Red Wings with a 5-3 victory in the NHL Stadium Series. This outdoor game not only showcased thrilling hockey but also paid homage to local traditions and honored the late Johnny Gaudreau, making it a significant milestone in the Blue Jackets’ pursuit of a playoff spot.

A Historic Venue Embraces Hockey

Ohio Stadium, affectionately known as “The Shoe,” transformed from its iconic football setting into a hockey arena for the first time. The venue, steeped in Ohio State University traditions, provided a unique backdrop for the game. The ice rink was framed by a large scarlet Block “O,” symbolizing the university’s emblem, and the Blue Jackets’ signature cannon was prominently displayed, blending the team’s identity with the stadium’s rich history.

The game felt similar to a home football game, with the Ohio State Athletic Band performing “Script Ohio” on the ice at the start of the game, and at the end of the game performed Carmen Ohio.

To top it off, each Blue Jacket goal had the cannon fired, as well as a “helmet sticker” placed one the left side of the rink, similar to awards the Ohio State football team earns.

Tributes to Johnny Gaudreau

The game was deeply emotional, as both teams honored the late Johnny Gaudreau, who tragically passed away in August 2024. The Blue Jackets, led by captain Boone Jenner, donned outfits inspired by Gaudreau’s signature style during their arrival, a gesture organized with the help of Gaudreau’s widow, Meredith. The Red Wings also paid their respects by wearing jerseys representing Gaudreau’s previous teams, including Boston College and Team USA. These heartfelt tributes highlighted the profound impact Gaudreau had on the hockey community.

Game Highlights

In front of a crowd of 94,751 fans—the second-largest in NHL history—the Blue Jackets showcased resilience and determination. Justin Danforth scored the game-winning goal with just 2:17 remaining, breaking a 3-3 tie. Goaltender Elvis Merzlikins delivered an outstanding performance with 43 saves. Additional goals from Denton Mateychuk, Dmitri Voronkov, Mathieu Olivier, and Adam Fantilli contributed to the team’s victory. For Detroit, Alex DeBrincat netted two goals, and Patrick Kane added another, but their efforts fell short against Columbus’s relentless offense.

Significance in the Playoff Race

This victory marked the Blue Jackets’ fourth consecutive win and propelled them into the Eastern Conference’s top wild-card spot. Since January 1, the team has posted a 14-6-2 record, reflecting a points percentage of .682, positioning them favorably in the competitive playoff race. The win against a close rival like Detroit underscores the team’s potential and determination as the season progresses.

The 2025 NHL Stadium Series at Ohio Stadium was more than just a game; it was a celebration of community, tradition, and the enduring spirit of hockey. The Blue Jackets’ performance not only honored the memory of a beloved teammate but also solidified their standing as formidable contenders in the pursuit of the Stanley Cup.

  • Great job by Ohio State and the Stadium support, ESPN really dropped the ball from what I hear though.
