Poll Watch Week 6: Ohio State Steady at the Top, Oregon and Ole Miss Climb
Week 5 of the college football season finally gave us the chaos fans have been waiting for, and the ripple effects are everywhere in the new Week 6 polls. Between Oregon’s thriller in Happy Valley, Ole Miss toppling LSU, Alabama winning in Athens, and Virginia pulling off a double-overtime shocker over Florida State, the landscape at the top of the rankings has shifted dramatically.
Ohio State remains the constant, still No. 1 in both the AP and Coaches polls after grinding out a 24–6 road win at Washington. The Buckeyes once again leaned on their dominant defense, while Julian Sayin and Jeremiah Smith provided just enough offense to secure the victory. Ryan Day’s team continues to look like the most complete roster in the country.
The biggest mover of the week is Oregon, which went into Beaver Stadium and survived Penn State 30–24 in double overtime. Dante Moore is building a Heisman campaign, and the Ducks have the résumé to back up their climb. Oregon is now No. 2 in both polls, closing the gap on Ohio State and proving they’re a legitimate playoff threat.
Ole Miss joins them in the top five after a 24–19 victory over LSU. Quarterback Trinidad Chambliss threw for 314 yards, and Lane Kiffin’s Rebels look every bit like an SEC contender. Georgia, meanwhile, slips outside the AP top 10 after falling at home to Alabama, while the Tide pick up a much-needed statement win to climb back into the conversation.
Elsewhere, Indiana kept its dream season alive with a hard-fought 20–15 win at Iowa. The Hoosiers rise to No. 8 in the AP and No. 9 in the Coaches poll, quietly becoming one of the sport’s biggest surprises. Virginia, meanwhile, sent shockwaves through the rankings by knocking off Florida State 46–38 in double overtime. The Cavaliers join the AP poll at No. 24, while the Seminoles plummet ten spots to No. 18.
Illinois continues its strong start as well, taking down USC 34–32 in Champaign. The Illini rise to No. 22 in both polls, while USC tumbles out of the rankings completely. Arizona State also earns its first ranking of the year after beating TCU 27–24.
The bottom line? Week 5 reshaped the playoff picture, and October promises even more drama. Oregon looks the part, Ole Miss has surged, Georgia and Florida State have ground to make up, and Ohio State remains the standard everyone else is chasing.
