Bold Predictions: Illinois
Ohio State enters Week 7 undefeated and unfazed after dismantling Minnesota 42–3 under the lights in the Horseshoe. Now the No. 1 Buckeyes hit the road for a primetime matchup in Champaign, where No. 17 Illinois looks to play spoiler in front of a fired-up home crowd. Ryan Day’s team opened as a 14.5-point favorite, but this trip has all the makings of a gritty Big Ten battle.
Illinois, led by quarterback Luke Altmyer, has been one of the league’s biggest surprises this fall. The junior passer has been sharp and efficient, completing nearly 74% of his throws with 12 touchdowns and no interceptions on the year.
What’s held the Illini back has been consistency on defense. They’ve allowed over 390 yards per game and have struggled to contain explosive plays — a dangerous weakness against an Ohio State offense that can score in bunches.
The Buckeyes, meanwhile, have found their stride behind freshman quarterback Julian Sayin, who’s thrown for 1,088 yards and 11 touchdowns while completing 78% of his passes through five games. Add in a deep backfield featuring CJ Donaldson, Bo Jackson, and James Peoples, plus the receiving duo of Jeremiah Smith and Carnell Tate, and this offense has multiple ways to break open a game.
With both teams ranked and Big Ten stakes high, here are three bold predictions for Saturday aftenoon in Champaign:
1. Sayin Steals the Show
Illinois’s defense might hold its own early, but over four quarters the Buckeyes’ tempo and depth will be too much. Expect Julian Sayin to deliver another efficient masterclass — over 300 yards passing with 4+ total touchdowns — including a deep-ball strike to either Smith or Tate to spark the offense. The Illini secondary will have to choose between pressing the perimeter or protecting the middle of the field, and either option favors Sayin’s precision.
2. llinois Hangs Tough, but OSU Pulls Away
Don’t expect an immediate blowout. Bret Bielema’s Illini will try to grind the clock behind Ca’Lil Valentine and Kaden Feagin, shortening the game and forcing Ohio State to sustain long drives. For a quarter or two, it’ll work — expect a tight first half. But once the Buckeyes adjust, their speed will take over. Prediction: Ohio State 17–10 at halftime, then a pair of third-quarter touchdowns break it open as the Buckeyes pull away for a comfortable win.
3. Turnovers Flip the Script
Illinois ranks among the national leaders in forced fumbles this season. But against a Buckeye offense that’s turned the ball over only twice all year, that strength might not translate. Instead, it’s the Ohio State defense — led by Caden Curry, Caleb Downs, and Sonny Styles — that will set the tone. Expect two takeaways and at least one short-field touchdown drive that shifts momentum firmly toward the Scarlet and Gray.
