Badgers Enjoy Home Cooking, Hold off Visiting Buckeyes
Ohio State started the game strong, building an 11-point lead within the first seven minutes, but Wisconsin responded with hot shooting, interior dominance, and some favorable home officiating to keep the Buckeyes at bay and ultimately take a 92–82 win in Madison.
The loss drops Ohio State to 14–7 overall and 6–5 in conference play, while Wisconsin improves to 16–6 and 8–3, marking their seventh win in eight games. The Badgers shot 52% from the field, including 9-of-26 from three, while limiting Ohio State to 40.6% overall and 10-of-29 from long range. Although the Buckeyes held a slight rebounding edge, 37–35 (14 offensive), generating a 15–9 advantage in second-chance points, Wisconsin dominated the paint 42–30. Both teams were efficient from the free-throw line, with Ohio State hitting 16-of-18 and Wisconsin 19-of-21.
Amare Bynum led Ohio State with 19 points and seven rebounds, while Bruce Thornton, who passed Michael Redd for 6th on Ohio State’s all-time scoring list, and Devin Royal each added 17. Taison Chatman contributed 14 off the bench. For Wisconsin, John Blackwell paced the team with 22 points, and Nick Boyd and Austin Rapp added 21 and 19, respectively. Noah Winter chipped in 11, and Aleksas Bielauskas scored 10.
1st Half
After both teams opened by missing their first four shots, Amare Bynum secured a defensive rebound and went coast to coast for the game’s first score. A defensive breakdown then allowed the Badgers an uncontested bucket, but John Mobley answered with five straight points, capped by a transition three. Mobley, however, picked up his second early foul just before the first media timeout, with Ohio State holding a 7–2 lead.
The Badgers got on the board with a bucket, but Ohio State responded as Devin Royal attacked the lane and finished with a dunk. The Buckeyes then stretched the margin with back-to-back threes from Bynum and Taison Chatman to push the lead to nine. Wisconsin answered with a 5–0 spurt to halt the 8–0 Buckeye run, but Bruce Thornton knocked down a three to stop the mini-run. The Badgers scored again in transition, only for Ohio State to answer with a Puff Johnson three from the left wing. Wisconsin quickly countered with a 7–0 run to trim the deficit, and at the under-12 timeout Ohio State held a 21–18 lead.
The Badger run carried over out of the timeout, with a three tying the game, but Ohio State snapped the 10–0 surge on a Bynum fadeaway in the paint. Wisconsin then knocked down another triple to claim its first lead, and at the under-8 timeout the Badgers were on top 24–23.
A Badger basket in transition pushed the deficit further, but Ohio State responded with a short jumper from Thornton and a pair of free throws by Bynum to regain the lead. Wisconsin quickly answered with another three, only to see Taison Chatman connect from deep to put the Buckeyes back in front. The lead flipped again as the Badgers scored four straight, before Ohio State answered on a Chatman give-and-go. Wisconsin added yet another three to extend the margin, but Gabe Cupps countered with a 15-footer. A final Badger jumper stretched the lead, and at the under-4 timeout Wisconsin held a 38–34 advantage.
Out of the timeout, Devin Royal went to the line and knocked down both free throws to cut the deficit to two, but the Badgers answered with yet another three. Taison Chatman responded with a triple of his own, before Wisconsin scored six straight to push the lead to eight. A Thornton jumper in the paint slowed the run, but the Badgers answered on the other end. Just before the horn, Bynum finished a runner off the glass, sending the teams to the locker room with Wisconsin leading 49–43.
A decisive 20–8 Wisconsin surge over a seven-minute stretch swung the momentum, turning an 11-point Buckeye advantage into a one-point deficit and ultimately a six-point halftime margin, fueled by red-hot Badger shooting from beyond the arc and a 24-14 advantage in the paint.
Ohio State shot 41% from the field in the first half, including 7-of-16 from three-point range. Wisconsin, which opened the game by missing eight of its first nine shots, finished the half at 57% and went 7-of-15 from deep, scoring on its final 10 possessions and knocking down eight straight shots during one stretch.
The Buckeyes were led by Amare Bynum and Taison Chatman with 11 points apiece. Wisconsin got a game-high 19 from Austin Rapp—a 28% three-point shooter on the season—who went 5-of-6 from beyond the arc in the first half. John Blackwell added 11, and Nick Boyd contributed 10.
2nd Half
Wisconsin opened the second half with a pair of baskets to push the lead to 10, its largest of the night, before Devin Royal drew a foul and knocked down both free throws. After another Badger score, Royal answered with a basket on a dribble drive. Wisconsin responded again off the bounce, but Royal came right back with an offensive rebound and putback following a Bynum miss. The Badgers continued to stay hot, drilling a three from the left corner, and at the under-16 timeout Wisconsin led 60–49.
Out of the timeout, Bruce Thornton went to the line and split a pair, and after a defensive stop Amare Bynum scored from the right block. Following a three-minute scoreless stretch—one that featured a few questionable non-calls favoring Wisconsin—the Badgers carried a 60–52 lead into the under-12 media timeout.
A pair of Badger free throws snapped the scoring drought, but John Mobley answered with a 10-foot jumper. Wisconsin then stretched the margin with an old-fashioned three-point play. Bruce Thornton responded with a corner three, and after a Badger bucket Devin Royal scored along the baseline. Wisconsin capitalized with two free throws after an offensive rebound extended the possession, pushing the lead back to 10, 69–59, at the under-8 media timeout.
Royal went to the stripe out of the timeout and hit the pair cutting the margin to 8 and after Tilly had a shot blocked in transition, Wisconsin scored uncontested at the other end at the rim. A Thornton short jumper cut into the lead, but a pair of Badger free throws kept the Buckeyes looking up at a 10-point deficit. After Thornton split two free throws, Wisconsin buried a three, but quickly the other way, Chatman drilled a three and Jake Diebler took a timeout with 5:11 to play and Wisconsin leading 76-67.
The Badgers added to the lead with 4 free throws and after a pair of Thornton free throws, Wisconsin answered with a score at the rim. A Mobley jumper was followed by another Badger score as Ohio State continued to struggle defensively. Thornton found Royal for a dunk and a Chatman foul, another questionable whistle, fouled him out of the game and sent the game to the final media timeout with Wisconsin leading 84-73.
Three free throws and a bucket increased the Badger lead to a game high 16 before a pair of Bynum free throws dropped. A Thornton driving score with just over a minute to play cut the deficit to 12 but too little too late for the Buckeyes. After Wisconsin split two free throws, Bynum buried a three to cut the deficit to 10 but with less than a minute to play, Ohio State had to play the foul game. Wisconsin hit both free throws and on the other end, Johnson got to the line and hit two to end the scoring.
Game Wrap
Ohio State has played excellent basketball for much of the season, but a recurring issue has been the inability to sustain intensity for a full 40 minutes and secure key Quad 1 wins. The Buckeyes got off to a strong start in this one, but inconsistent defensive stops and a lack of toughness in the paint continued to plague the team. Without a marquee win on their resume, Ohio State remains squarely on the bubble, and until they can knock off a couple of high-level opponents, that status is unlikely to change. This also increases pressure to avoid losses against teams they are expected to beat.
The absence of a fully healthy Christoph Tilly was evident, 0-8 from the field without scoring, limiting offensive balance against a team like Wisconsin. John Mobley, who had been red hot over the past four games, started strong but picked up two early fouls that took him out of rhythm, a key factor in Wisconsin turning an early deficit into a lead they would never relinquish.
On the positive side, the Buckeyes’ bench contributed 21 points, led by the surging Taison Chatman, who set a career high in scoring for the second straight game, is settling into a critical role off the bench and the more minutes Puff Johnson sees, the more he can bolster the team’s depth on the glass and scoring.
Looking ahead, Ohio State will aim to bounce back on the road in what can be considered a must-win game Thursday at Maryland, before returning home for another chance at a season-defining victory against Michigan next Sunday afternoon.
